Biography
Delphine Lebourgeois is a French artist based in London. She studied Fine Art in Ecole des Beaux Arts de Lyon and completed her Masters at Central St Martins in 2005. Her work has been exhibited internationally including at the Saatchi Gallery, the Royal Academy of Art and the Caroussel du Louvre. Her images have been featured in The Guardian, Vogue, Colossal, Time Out, Stylist, EA Games and Soho House amongst others.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I tell stories through precise scenarios that explore human psychology, consumerism, power dynamics, female identity and trauma. Working across drawing — the core of my practice — and printmaking, I create layered visual narratives rooted in intuition and symbolism. At first there’s always an idea born from an emotion. Before making the first mark, I spend time mentally building a world around a theme, collecting images, book excerpts and anything related. I often work in series, allowing ideas to “brew” internally until the project feels strong enough in my mind. Only then do I begin making the work. Drawing from references as varied as ancient Greek sculpture, Japanese space anime, fairy tales, and popular folklore, I create patchworked stories in which female characters take centre stage. Alone or as a collective, my warrior women become guardians of our individual freedom, embodying both fierceness and vulnerability. Humour, playfulness, and irreverence are important elements in my work. Rather than representing the ordeal itself, I imagine my stories as possible antidotes, images that empower, provoke or amuse. Through this balance of darkness and wit, I aim to create surreal spaces where fantasy and collective identification can emerge. I believe drawing is an essential medium today, one that carries human sensitivity and acts as a revealer of the unconscious in the face of the visual immediacy of our digital age.
